Short-term Solutions with Long-term Benefits: Talking with Tina Santiago About Pop-Ups

When it comes to revitalizing urban neighborhoods, the prevailing logic has (understandably) often focused on finding long-term solutions: bringing in long-term tenants, creating new buildings and infrastructure, and opening new public spaces like parks and plazas. But increasingly, planners, developers, businesses, and residents are finding opportunity in the form of shorter-term solutions, like pop-up shops.

Maps provide lenses through which we can view and understand the world. Electoral maps tell us if we’re in red states or blue states. A Yelp map can show us a neighborhood through its coffee shops and sushi joints. And the Green Map System, a nonprofit founded in 1995, is helping people see the world in terms of sustainability.

This was my fourth year at the SOCAP (Social Capital Markets) conference at Fort Mason in San Francisco. It gets bigger and better every year, and this year was the largest to date with 1,600 attendees from over 50 countries. What's unique about SOCAP is the chance to hear directly from the most progressive foundations, financial advisors, impact investors, and social entrepreneurs. It's fascinating, and hopeful.
