In 2004, Peter Bennett and Stephen Barrie wanted to create a book that would answer the question, “Why am I so tired?” Bennett and Barrie didn’t want to publish another fad diet book, though. They wanted to help people change the way they live so they can lose weight, increase energy, and reduce stress. Hot Studio was asked to work with them on designing such a book.

Human-centered design translates into print
Typically, designers are hired after a book is written. For this project, we were involved from the initial concept until we saw the books roll off the printing press. We used the same people-centered design tactics that we use with interactive projects, guiding the doctors through our process, from creating the concept and outline to laying out each individual page.

Emphasizing visual, non-linear storytelling
The book—Energize Your Life—is organized around three main concepts: eating, exercising, and reducing stress.  Because of its visual, non-linear design, busy readers can easily skip to relevant sections. The first 50,000 copies of Energize Your Life were printed in June 2005.
